A couple of recent conversations and conference sessions have got me thinking that soon, one of our colleagues will request a car to be certified and connected under our “BYOD” program? Makes me think of an elephant arriving at the front desk on the “bring your pet to work” day! Car manufacturers and telcos are feverishly working on connecting cars to the wireless networks and developing cool new features and applications for the future models.
At this CTO Roundtable on “The Connected Car”, we reviewed cool new technologies that are being integrated into the cars of tomorrow. We discussed how work could be conducted in-transit and the policy and safety implications of these advances.
The discussion was led by Frank Weith, GM for Connected Services at Volkswagen Group of America. Frank is responsible for launching and expanding the Connected Services features, as well as defining and implementing the long term strategies for future Programs. This includes managing the North American Market requirements for services and content, and identifying future technologies relating to connectivity and the integration of features into the infotainment and navigation platforms.
Previously, Frank worked at the VW Electronics Research Labs in Palo Alto, California. There he was responsible for coordinating the Engineering Research activities with Product Strategy for Infotainment and Connectivity, Driver Assist Technologies, Powertrain, BEV and Hybrid applications.
